April is National Autism Awareness Month and a very special month for Mr. Joel Rodriguez, Oso New Tech teacher.

Mr. Rodriguez said he is always thinking of different ways to bring elementary fun back to high school. While talking to Ms. Ana Trejo, she mentioned the Autism Awareness Event, and he thought it was a good project to spread autism awareness.

The event took place at Bowie on April 2, 2018, which is World Autism Awareness Day.

“It was a collaborative effort of many, many people. It was not a one person job. If it would’ve been a one person job it would’ve been horrible. It was many players doing their part,” Mr. Rodriguez said.

Some of the people who helped organize this event were Mr. Diego Medina, Maggie and Rosie Rodriguez, Priscilla Meraz, 10,  and Oso New Tech Council members Yulianna Salas and Perla Bouche. When releasing the 200 balloons, there was a lot of excitement amongst the kids. After the event, Mr. Rodriguez confessed he went home and cried a little.

“I went home and I cried a little. I hugged my boy a lot and I thanked my daughter and my wife. I felt accomplished and I took a long nap,” Mr. Rodriguez said.

The point of this event was for people to be aware of how autism really is. He wanted them to understand that children with autism are just differently able to do things.

Students also participated in the 10th Annual Autism Run Walk on April 28 ,2018 in the Chihuahua’s Stadium.

“Autism is one of those things that is different. Students and everybody who see Autism, will never see one person with Autism and see another one who is exactly the same, because they are all different. I just really wanted people to be aware of the indifferences that there are and how this people are differently able to do things and for people to be tolerant to each other.”  said Mr. Rodriguez.
