The Tianguis del Chamizal is a free community event that includes music, food, and activites, and theatrical entertainment created by a social group from the community called Familias Unidas that works to bring awareness to injustices in the Chamizal area. On Sept. 27 Familias Unidas hosted its third Tianguis at Estrella Park, where they brought ancestral foods, games and music.

Clarissa Tiscareno, member of Familias Unidas, said with these events they are able to inform other parents and residents of the Chamizal area of the problems and projects of the community. Tiscareno first got involved with Familias Unidas when a teacher from Beall Elementary talked to her about the need to defend the school from closure, she and others then began to organize with other parents to keep the school open. From experiences, Familias Unidas was able to create a theatrical play depicting the ups and downs of their journey.

“I think it is important to involve the community in things like the Tianguis because like this we can gain more support to fight for what is right in our community,” Tiscareno said.

“Familias Unidas decided to create a play to show dangers many families face with the closure of Beall school and the effects of the pollution of the Chamizal area,” Tiscareno said.
