Former Graduate Nolan Richardson To Have Former College Named After Him

Nolan Richardson, born and raised El Pasoan and also former Bowie grad. and basketball coach, is going to have a second gym named after him at the University of Arkansas where he won an NCAA championship.

“Coach Nolan Richardson is not only a true Razorback legend, he is one of the most impactful coaches in the history of college basketball,” UA chancellor Joseph Steinmetz told KFSM.

Richardson started his basketball victories here at Bowie High School where he graduated in 1959. Not only is he an alum but Richardson also coached at Bowie for multiple years.

In his 22 years of coaching at the collegiate level, Richardson has managed to obtain a record of 508-206 and has become the only head coach in college basketball history to win a National Junior College Championship, NIT Championship and NCAA championship.

Richardson was the first born and raised El Pasoen to be elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014 and in 2015 Bowie’s gymnasium was named after him. Nolan Richardson left a mark on Bowie he was once the basketball, football, track and golf.
