The Bowie Bears scored 26 points in a row to overcome a slow offensive to defeat the Irvin Rockets 26-14 on the road Oct. 11 to improve to 2-0 in district .

To start the second  half the Bears took the lead by scoring the first touchdown in the third quarter. Quarterback Justin Diaz connected his pass to wide receiver Carlos Varela for a 17 yard touchdown. Then, running back  Johnny Murillo ran for a 54 yard touchdown to give Bowie their second touchdown. By the end of the 3rd quarter the Bears led 19-7.

“I felt pretty excited because they chose us as their homecoming game and they thought it was gonna be pretty easy so I thought it was pretty exciting for us and I was ready,” Diaz said.

The defense stepped up when  linebacker Josue Reyes intercepted the Irvin quarterback, to setup the final touchdown 

Once again Murillo scored a 7 yard touchdown that gave Bowie a 26-7 lead. With three minutes left in the game, Irvin scored again to give the 26-14 final score.

“Honestly it was a tough game they were a great team we just had to fight through it to see who was the better team in the end,” Varela said.

In the first half, the Bears were struggling to move the ball, which led them to a score of 0-0. Running Backs William Carrasco and Andrew Gallardo after getting injured against El Paso high two weeks ago.

“I knew it was gonna be hard because its their homecoming. We were hurting, we had two of our best players not playing today so it was hard because I know my other guys can do it,” coach Andres Vale said.

To start the second quarter, the Rockets scored the first touchdown of the game, which led the Rockets to a 7-0 lead. Bowie scored on the next possession but missed the extra point to trail Irvin 7-6.

“Coach just told us to be ourselves. He gave us the liberty to do what we do best and we decided to come out and fight,” Diaz said.

The win on Friday snapped a two-game losing streak to Irvin. The Bears are also in a good spot to clinch a playoff position as they are one win away from doing so. The bears will now be facing the Austin Panthers at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at home.
