Mauricio Olague, Class Of ’81: “I have several accomplishments, I won the city wrestling championship 3 years in a row, I designed the cover of the yearbook for the year I graduated in, and I got an award for a story I wrote for the Bowie Growler. It felt awesome to succeed at a goal that you have set for yourself.”
Before They Were Teachers
The Growler asked some of the teachers here at school what kind of experiences they had when they were still attending Bowie.
Mary Martin, Class of '00: “My biggest accomplishment of high school was winning the homecoming queen. When I was walking down with my mom, which was beside me, I felt special and very happy.”
Mementos
Whether it’s an old photo, a worn down teddy bear, or just a memory, there’s something everybody has that reminds them of the good old times. As we are preparing for the departure of the Class of 2018, we asked a few seniors what momentos they hold close to their hearts.
Adrian Hernandez say he also still has a pair of baby sandals. "What makes them special is that I had them since I was some days old, and my parents still have it to this day." Hernandez says that since they mean a lot to him, he would eventually pass it down to his future children.
Childhood Dreams
Seniors are not the only students with memories. We asked several students what they wanted to be when they grew up.
Nathan Aguirre, 12, thought about becoming a firefighter at the age of five. "When I was little I wanted to become a fireman to stop all the fires in the world. I wanted to help people that were trapped inside the houses and be a hero. I thought that being a fireman would be cool. Helping people and doing stuff like carrying air tanks that would make me look like a cool, important guy." Aguirre still considers this career, but not as soon as he may think. "Now I do consider it, but maybe after my contract as a soldier is done."
Antonio Guerrero, 9, says he still wants to become a police officer because “they get paid good.”
Melanie Tavares, 9, wants to pursue a career as a math teacher. “I wanted to be a math teacher, because I love helping others with what they don’t understand.”
Freshman Mistakes
The Growler asked some seniors what mistakes they made at school back when they were freshmen.
Abel Ojeda: "My biggest mistake as a freshman was ditching a lot [of classes]."
