Volleyball falls to Jefferson

The volleyball team opened the Battle of the South Side against the Jefferson Silver Foxes Sept. 11 at Nolan Richardson gym with a 3-set loss by the scores of 25-11, 25-12, 25-17.

“They had good rallies and then still, better volleyball and faster volleyball than we’ve had in a long time”, coach Lourdes Balderrama said.

The Foxes started off rolling with a 9-2 run in the first set, followed up with a 9-4 run to take the lead 18-6, before ultimately winning the set by a score of 25-11. The Foxes showed strength in hitting as most of their points came from their spikes.

The second set was a lot closer than the first, as the Bears kept up with the Foxes at 10-7, until Jefferson pulled away with a 19-11 lead, and eventually went on to win  the set 25-12.

The third set was the best set for the Bears  that night, as they managed to keep a lead through the beginning of the third set. The Foxes managed to catch up and take the lead 16-14 before rallying and winning the 3rd set, and taking the game three sets to none. Both teams showed lots of attacking, but Jefferson was able to pull out the win in all three sets.

The volleyball team is now 2-5 in district play, and look to shake it off Sept. 14 against top-team El Paso High Tigers at El Paso High School.

“Moving forward, we need harder hitters … but our girls are doing a great job in taking and picking up the hits,” coach Balderrama said.
